About Career Exploration and Success
Career Exploration and Success (CES) is committed to assisting students with making connections between their academic experience and career paths. We provide career-related advising, resources, and programs to help individuals discover their interests, values, and skills, explore careers and majors, develop skills through internships and experiential opportunities, and pursue their post-graduate goals. We build relationships with alumni, employers, and graduate schools to optimize internship, job, and career opportunities while also creating strategic partnerships with campus departments to assist students in developing and articulating co-curricular experiences that will help to ensure they are competitive in their future pursuits.
CES is comprised of four units, each with its own director who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of their unit, making hiring decisions, providing leadership to their unit, managing their unit's budget, solving challenges and celebrating wins, and making decisions aligned with overarching goals.
About the Career Operations & Strategic Initiatives Unit
One of four units within the Office of Career Exploration and Success, the Career Operations & Strategic Initiatives Unit ensures equal access to CES resources, connects students to them, provides data-driven decision support, and establishes essential administrative and technical structures for smooth operations. The COSI unit consists of seven full-time staff members and four graduate coordinators organized into two teams led by associate directors: the Operations Team and the Strategic Outreach & Marketing Team (associated with this role).
About the Strategic Outreach & Marketing Team
Aligned with the COSI Unit's mission, the Strategic Outreach & Marketing Team undertakes a multifaceted mission: driving awareness of CES resources, encouraging student engagement, and critically guiding our staff in maintaining a professional presence. Through adept brand management and deliberate communication strategies, the team ensures student confidence in our mission and enhances our department’s credibility and excellence, fostering positive perceptions among students and employers alike.
About the Director of Career Operations & Strategic Initiatives
Barbara Thomson is the director of Career Operations & Strategic Initiatives, appointed in 2021. Barbara has served in various roles within CES, including Marketing and Technology specialists and associate director of Technology & Data Management. In 2018, Barbara co-accepted the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) Technology Innovation Award for her work establishing the student-run Career Services Technology Help Desk and she has been involved in leadership roles within the HireBig10+ Career Consortium.
About the Executive Director
Barbara Thomson, Director of Career Operations & Strategic Initiatives, reports to William (Wil) Jones, Executive Director of Career Exploration and Success. Wil was officially named Executive Director in 2021 by Rutgers University-New Brunswick Chancellor-Provost Francine Conway. Jones previously served in various roles within CES, including Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives, Senior Director, and interim Executive Director. At Rutgers, he co-founded the industry-centric career community approach to career development – which has become a national model – to diversify office offerings and help students think about their professional goals beyond the confines of their academic discipline. Before joining Rutgers, Wil oversaw the marketing, assessment, and technology teams at the University of Maryland, among other responsibilities.
Position Description
The Associate Director for Strategic Outreach and Marketing, reporting to the Director of Career Operations and Strategic Initiatives, leads initiatives to raise awareness of the Office of Career Exploration and Success. Managing the Strategic Outreach and Communications Team, including an Assistant Director for Marketing and Visual Identity, two Graduate Coordinator marketing interns, and three undergraduate interns (including a videographer), the role ensures student engagement in career development and supports employer connections. Responsibilities include promoting workshops annually, various services, and major events such as career fairs and other signature career events. Additionally, the Associate Director chairs the Mastering the Art of Networking event committee and collaborates with other CES units to develop engagement strategies for students, alumni, employers, and campus partners. They oversee advertising, event promotion, and branding efforts, partner with external and internal media, and manage the department's print, editorial, and digital media services. Furthermore, they supervise email campaigns, organize outreach programs, and strategically enhance the Rutgers CES brand in regional and national career service landscapes.
Marketing and Communications Management
The Associate Director oversees advertising, event promotion, and branding efforts, partnering with both external and internal media. Responsibilities include managing marketing campaigns, updating internal staff and campus partners monthly, and developing event promotion strategies. This entails creating a master marketing plan for each academic year, executing campus-wide campaigns, and ensuring marketing support for workshops and major events. Additionally, they enforce CES and university brand guidelines, cultivate vendor relationships, and utilize data to understand student preferences and brand awareness. They also manage CES's online social media presence and collaborate with the Assistant Director for Marketing and Visual Identity to implement strategies. They are responsible for creating, designing, and executing direct email marketing campaigns and managing weekly career community newsletter highlights. They enhance email templates based on data analysis and develop content for clarity and effectiveness.
Supervision, Leadership, and Budget Management
They oversee a team, handle hiring and performance appraisals, and manage an operating budget. Additionally, they chair the Mastering the Art of Networking Conference & Etiquette Dinner, coordinate the core programs calendar, and ensure competitive vendor selection processes.
Community Engagement and Campus Partnerships
The Associate Director leads a team of CES student interns and coordinates large-scale marketing programs and events such as the CES Open House, pop-up programs, etc. They oversee CES presence at university marketing events (e.g., Rutgers Day, Admitted Student Open House, etc.) and collaborate with other campuses to market programs. Additionally, they manage the Campus Partners program and maintain communication with faculty and staff through mailers and e-newsletters. The Associate Director collaborates with department staff to organize and manage educational programs for students, overseeing the implementation and coordination of yearly events. They also lead office-wide outreach campaigns and participate in strategic initiatives.
Print, Editorial, Photo, Video & Web Services
The Associate Director supervises the marketing tasks of the Assistant Director of Visual Identity and Marketing, including coordinating print and digital materials, providing editorial services, and overseeing web and social media content creation. They work with a photography and videography intern to enhance CES's online presence and maintain the office website.
Media Relations and Strategic Communications
The Associate Director develops and maintains a media relations strategy, writes press releases, and manages CES's online presence. They also collaborate with university public relations specialists and oversee communications management.
Miscellaneous Duties
The Associate Director participates in meetings and all-hands-on-deck events, seeks professional development opportunities, and undertakes assigned tasks.
Candidate Profile
To be considered for the associate director position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Experience and Education: A bachelor’s degree in Communication, Public Relations, Visual design, Psychology, Sociology, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or a similar program is required. Five (5) years of Career Services, Marketing, or relevant industry experience is also required.
- Skills and Competencies: Should have an in-depth understanding of marketing and communication tactics and the needs of students. Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively in teams, problem-solve, and manage projects and timelines. Should also have a track record of successfully increasing engagement by audiences and proficiency with standard office software packages.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in an applicable subject area is preferred. Ideally, the person will have experience managing marketing and outreach programs within a career services or higher education setting.
Flexible Work Arrangement Program
Rutgers is pleased to announce the extension of the FlexWork@RU Pilot Program through August 31, 2024. Full-time staff members within Career Exploration and Success are permitted to either a 4:1 compressed work week or up to two days per week of remote work.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 and extended through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Additionally, CES has implemented #FocusFriday, a department-wide practice where internal meetings between CES colleagues are discouraged every Friday. This dedicated time enables staff to concentrate on accomplishing their goals. Periodic meditation or mental health breaks throughout the day are also supported. To further support productivity, CES encourages the utilization of automated "Focus Blocks" through Microsoft Outlook. These automated blocks allow staff members to schedule designated periods of uninterrupted work time, further maximizing productivity and focus.
