About Career Exploration and Success
Career Exploration and Success (CES) is committed to assisting students with making connections between their academic experience and career paths. We provide career-related advising, resources, and programs to help individuals discover their interests, values, and skills, explore careers and majors, develop skills through internships and experiential opportunities, and pursue their post-graduate goals. We build relationships with alumni, employers, and graduate schools to optimize internship, job, and career opportunities while also creating strategic partnerships with campus departments to assist students in developing and articulating co-curricular experiences that will help to ensure they are competitive in their future pursuits.
CES is comprised of four units, each with its own director who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of their unit, making hiring decisions, providing leadership to their unit, managing their unit's budget, solving challenges and celebrating wins, and making decisions aligned with overarching goals.

About the Career Readiness Unit
One of four units within the Office of Career Exploration and Success, the Career Readiness Unit guides students through the later stages of their career journey. Its main goals are to help them develop skills, connect to meaningful professional experiences, and master contemporary strategies to enhance competitiveness post-graduation. The unit consists of 11 full-time staff members and three graduate coordinators organized into two teams led by associate directors: the Career Success Strategy Team and the Internships & Professional Development Team (associated with this role).

About the Associate Director, Internships & Professional Development
As the associate director and direct supervisor, Lyn Baier oversees a portfolio of high-impact programs, including the Rutgers Scarlet Service Internship Program, Rutgers Internship & Co-op Program, Professional Development Programs, and the Student Employee Enrichment Program. Lyn has decades of experience leading high-impact experiential education programs, including the peer-led First-year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS).

About the Director of Career Readiness
Jennifer Broyles is the Director of Career Readiness. With nearly two decades of experience in career services at multiple institutions, Jennifer's extensive background positions her as a capable leader who can successfully navigate the challenges of today. Her accomplishments, such as collaborating with faculty to connect hundreds of undergraduate researchers to the world of work at The College of New Jersey and co-creating the now nationally utilized career communities' model during her time at Rutgers, demonstrate her expertise in establishing partnerships, developing experiential education opportunities, and enhancing career readiness. Jennifer is widely recognized for her work by the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers and the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

About the Executive Director
Jennifer Broyles, Director of Career Readiness, reports to William (Wil) Jones, Executive Director of Career Exploration and Success. Wil was officially named Executive Director in 2021 by Rutgers University-New Brunswick Chancellor-Provost Francine Conway. Jones previously served in various roles within CES, including Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives, Senior Director, and interim Executive Director. At Rutgers, he co-founded the industry-centric career community approach to career development – which has become a national model – to diversify office offerings and help students think about their professional goals beyond the confines of their academic discipline. Before joining Rutgers, Wil oversaw various functions at the University of Maryland Career Center, including helping student leaders translate their experiences to the world of work by making connections to the skills employers sought.

Position Description
Reporting to the Associate Director for Internships and Professional Development, the Senior Assistant Director (UHR Title: Career Counseling Officer) role ensures that all students—regardless of major or career interest—are equipped with the career competencies and transferable skills necessary for professional success. The Senior Assistant Director will oversee student organization engagement, career readiness programming for CES student colleagues, and the management of professional skill-building programs. Additionally, this role serves as a key liaison to Student Involvement, and experiential learning programs, embedding career readiness initiatives across student engagement and co-curricular activities.
Management of Professional Development Initiatives
The Senior Assistant Director will lead career readiness initiatives that help students identify, articulate, and apply transferable skills gained through academic, co-curricular, and experiential learning experiences. They will oversee collaborations with campus experiential learning providers such as undergraduate research, study abroad, leadership development, service learning, and student organizations to ensure students can effectively translate their experiences into professional opportunities.
They will manage the Student Organization Career Readiness Initiative, working with colleagues in Student Affairs to embed professional development into student leadership training and events. This includes leading the Student Organization Reception and Employer Networking Dinner (SOREND) signature event planning committee and coordinating student organization career readiness presentations in partnership with CES graduate coordinators and student colleagues from across the department.
This role will also oversee the development of lesson plans, curricula, and structured professional development content for CES presentations while managing a train-the-trainer program for CES staff, graduate coordinators, and student colleagues. Additionally, they will track student engagement and program impact to refine strategies for greater effectiveness.

Career Readiness Programming for CES Student Colleagues
The Senior Assistant Director will oversee career readiness initiatives for CES student colleagues, ensuring that their work experience enhances their professional skills and career preparedness. They will manage the CES World-of-Work (WOW) Program, which serves as the structured career readiness orientation for CES student colleagues during the summer, providing training and team-building opportunities that prepare them for their roles within CES. As a member of the CES Staff Engagement and Professional Development Committee, they will support additional semesterly recognition sessions, ensuring alignment with the Student Employee Enrichment (SEE) Program.

Career Advising
The Senior Assistant Director will provide direct career advising and coaching services to undergraduate students, focusing on career readiness competencies, transferable skills, and professional identity development. Advising will center on helping students recognize and articulate skills gained through academic coursework, leadership roles, and experiential learning opportunities. The Senior Assistant Director will also assist students in internship and job search strategies, resume and cover letter development, interview preparation, and networking skills.
This position will develop methods to expand advising capacity through both individual career coaching and group-based skill-building sessions, ensuring that more students have access to career exploration resources. They will collaborate with CES career advisors and campus partners to integrate transferable skills education into workshops, employer engagement events, and student organization programming.

Miscellaneous Duties
The Senior Assistant Director will actively participate in CES team meetings, professional development opportunities, and strategic planning discussions to support the mission of Career Exploration and Success. They will contribute to Rutgers University’s leadership in career education by engaging in professional organizations, presenting at career services conferences, and supporting career readiness research and initiatives. Additionally, they will support other CES programs and initiatives as needed to ensure that students across all academic disciplines have access to career competency development and professional networking opportunities.

Candidate Profile
To be considered for the assistant director position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Experience and Education: A bachelor’s degree and at least five (5) years of relevant experience in career services, workforce development, student success programming, or a related field; or a master’s degree with at least three (3) years of relevant experience in these areas. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also be considered. A master's degree is preferred. Experience within a career services, employer relations, or higher education setting.
- Skills and Competencies: With a strong student-focused orientation, this role requires experience in designing career programs and initiatives that help students identify transferable skills, build professional competencies, and navigate career pathways. The ability to make strategic decisions related to program development, employer engagement, and student success initiatives is essential. Expertise in public speaking, workshop facilitation, and advising is also necessary, along with the confidence to lead these efforts autonomously. Success in this role requires a self-motivated individual who can take initiative, adapt to change, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.






Flexible Work Arrangement Program
Rutgers is pleased to announce the extension of the FlexWork@RU Pilot Program through August 31, 2024. Full-time staff members within Career Exploration and Success are permitted to either a 4:1 compressed work week or up to two days per week of remote work.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 and extended through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Additionally, CES has implemented #FocusFriday, a department-wide practice where internal meetings between CES colleagues are discouraged every Friday. This dedicated time enables staff to concentrate on accomplishing their goals. Periodic meditation or mental health breaks throughout the day are also supported. To further support productivity, CES encourages the utilization of automated "Focus Blocks" through Microsoft Outlook. These automated blocks allow staff members to schedule designated periods of uninterrupted work time, further maximizing productivity and focus.
