About the Career Readiness Unit

One of four units within the Office of Career Exploration and Success, the Career Readiness Unit guides students through the later stages of their career journey. Its main goals are to help them develop skills, connect to meaningful professional experiences, and master contemporary strategies to enhance competitiveness post-graduation. The unit consists of 11 full-time staff members and three graduate coordinators organized into two teams led by associate directors: the Career Success Strategy Team and the Internships & Professional Development Team.

About the Career Success Strategy Team and Career Communities

Aligned with the Career Readiness Unit's mission, the Career Success Strategy team provides coaching and programs tailored for students within specific career interest communities. Additionally, the team develops and nurtures campus partnerships to enhance outreach and specialization, ensuring students excel in contemporary job searches and graduate school applications, all in line with CES’s overarching mission to prepare students for competitive success post-graduation.

Twelve years ago, Rutgers—New Brunswick developed the career interest-centric approach to career development within a large, centralized career office. The Rutgers model has been showcased at numerous statewide, regional, and national gatherings. Career communities provide tailored access to preparation programs, recruiting events, job listings, alumni mentors, and more! Each community has a student-facing lead (Sr. Assistant Director, Career Success Strategy), an employer-facing lead, and an advisory board comprised of campus partners, employers, and student leaders aligned with the community. Soon, there will be a Peer Career Educator and Industry Consultant aligned with each community.

As the associate director and direct supervisor, Joe Scott oversees a portfolio of career interest communities and directly leads the Technology & Engineering Community. Joe has decades of experience leading teams and supporting the career success of students.

About the Director of Career Readiness

Jennifer Broyles is the Director of Career Readiness. With nearly two decades of experience in career services at multiple institutions, Jennifer's extensive background positions her as a capable leader who can successfully navigate the challenges of today. Her accomplishments, such as collaborating with faculty to connect hundreds of undergraduate researchers to the world of work at The College of New Jersey and co-creating the now nationally utilized career communities' model during her time at Rutgers, demonstrate her expertise in establishing partnerships, developing experiential education opportunities, and enhancing career readiness. Jennifer is widely recognized for her work by the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers and the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

About the Executive Director

Jennifer Broyles, Director of Career Readiness, reports to William (Wil) Jones, Executive Director of Career Exploration and Success. Wil was officially named Executive Director in 2021 by Rutgers University-New Brunswick Chancellor-Provost Francine Conway. Jones previously served in various roles within CES, including Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives, Senior Director, and interim Executive Director. At Rutgers, he co-founded the industry-centric career community approach to career development – which has become a national model – to diversify office offerings and help students think about their professional goals beyond the confines of their academic discipline. Before joining Rutgers, Wil oversaw various functions at the University of Maryland Career Center, including helping student leaders translate their experiences to the world of work by making connections to the skills employers sought.

Position Description

Reporting to the associate director for Career Success Strategy, the senior assistant director (UHR Title: Career Counseling Officer) will serve as a convener and leader within the career community, fostering collaboration among Career Exploration and Success (CES) staff who align with the community, including the Assistant Director of Industry to Campus Connections (reports to a different team), a volunteer Industry Consultant, and a student Peer Career Educator. The Senior Assistant Director will develop and implement career programming tailored to students interested in the career community, expanding access to industry professionals, employer engagement opportunities, and experiential learning initiatives. Additionally, this role will serve as a key liaison to campus offices, faculty, student organizations, and external partners supporting students within this career community and will oversee programming such as employer field trips, career panels, funding for co-sponsored student organization events, and other engagement opportunities.

Management of the Career Community

The senior assistant director will oversee career programming designed to connect students with career pathways in their career community. This includes developing initiatives that help students explore industry roles, refine their professional skills, and build relationships with employers and alumni in relevant fields. They will lead and coordinate the efforts of CES staff within the career community, ensuring collaborative programming and employer engagement efforts between the Assistant Director of Industry to Campus Connections, Part-Time Industry Consultant, and Peer Career Educator. Additionally, they will oversee key initiatives such as field trips to employer sites, industry panels, and a funding program to support student organizations that host career-related programs. The Senior Assistant Director will develop and execute engagement strategies that bring together faculty, industry professionals, and student leaders to create a dynamic career community that fosters connections and career exploration. They will also serve as the primary contact for career presentation requests from student organizations, academic units, and campus stakeholders specifically within the career community, ensuring students receive targeted career programming and industry insights.

Leadership and Community Engagement

The senior assistant director will cultivate a vibrant career community that integrates students, alumni, faculty, employers, and campus partners to expand career exploration and professional development opportunities. They will lead their Career Community Advisory Board, which will provide insight into industry trends, employer engagement strategies, and student needs within the community. The advisory board will include faculty, staff, industry professionals, and student leaders who are committed to expanding career opportunities and experiential learning within the career community. Additionally, the Senior Assistant Director will convene and coordinate CES staff working within their Career Community, ensuring alignment across employer engagement, advising, and student programming efforts. They will serve as a key liaison to academic departments, student organizations, and professional associations that align with the career community, ensuring career programming is responsive to the needs of students and industry partners.

The senior assistant director will provide student-centered career advising that helps students develop the skills, experiences, and competencies needed to be competitive in their future career and academic pursuits. Advising will focus on helping students identify and secure field experiences, research opportunities, and internships that enhance their industry readiness while supporting their long-term professional and educational goals. Students will receive tailored guidance on building industry connections, gaining relevant hands-on experience, and successfully pursuing post-graduation pathways, including the job search process and graduate or professional school applications. Advising will also emphasize navigating competitive hiring and admissions processes, identifying key qualifications sought by employers and graduate programs, and developing strategies to maximize career readiness. The Senior Assistant Director will identify and implement approaches to expand advising capacity through group advising within the community and individual career coaching, ensuring all students have access to the tools they need to achieve meaningful post-graduation outcomes.

Oversight of a Specialty Career Resource

In addition to overseeing the Career Community, the Senior Assistant Director will take on oversight of a specialty career program within Career Exploration and Success. Depending on departmental needs, this could include managing initiatives such as the Peer Career Educator Program, Industry Consultant Program, The Career Closet, campus partner engagement tracking data initiatives, or another signature resource. In this capacity, they will ensure the ongoing success and growth of the assigned program, integrating it into broader CES career success strategies, coordinating student engagement, and optimizing its impact on career development efforts.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities

The senior assistant director will actively participate in meetings, professional development opportunities, and collaborative initiatives that advance the mission of Career Exploration and Success. They will contribute to elevating Rutgers University’s reputation as a leader in career development by presenting at industry conferences, engaging in professional communities, and supporting award nominations and recognition efforts. Additionally, they will support other career programs and initiatives as needed to ensure all students have access to networks, resources, and experiences that will prepare them for lifelong professional success.

Candidate Profile

To be considered for the assistant director position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Experience and Education: A bachelor’s degree and at least five (5) years of relevant experience in career services, workforce development, student success programming, or a related field; or a master’s degree with at least three (3) years of relevant experience in these areas. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also be considered. A master's degree is preferred. Experience within a career services, employer relations, or higher education setting, particularly supporting students in healthcare, life sciences, or medical professions.
  2. Skills and Competencies: With a strong student-focused orientation, this role requires experience in designing career programs and initiatives that help students navigate job search challenges, including building professional networks, researching employers, applying to graduate programs, and securing industry-relevant experiences. The ability to make strategic decisions related to program development, employer engagement, and student success initiatives is essential. Expertise in public speaking, workshop facilitation, and advising is also necessary, along with the confidence to lead these efforts autonomously. Success in this role requires a self-motivated individual who can take initiative, adapt to change, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

This position offers a competitive salary and benefits.

Salary Transparency

The position is classified as an AFT-6 grade, and its "lifetime" salary range is between $65,741 and $97,972. However, the starting salary offer has a budgetary maximum of $75,382, which will be determined based on the candidate's experience.

Flexible Work Arrangement Program

Rutgers is pleased to announce the extension of the FlexWork@RU Pilot Program through August 31, 2025. Full-time staff members within Career Exploration and Success are permitted to either a 4:1 compressed work week or up to two days per week of remote work. 

The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 and extended through August 31, 2025. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Additionally, CES has implemented #FocusFriday, a department-wide practice where internal meetings between CES colleagues are discouraged every Friday. This dedicated time enables staff to concentrate on accomplishing their goals.  Periodic meditation or mental health breaks throughout the day are also supported. To further support productivity, CES encourages the utilization of automated "Focus Blocks" through Microsoft Outlook. These automated blocks allow staff members to schedule designated periods of uninterrupted work time, further maximizing productivity and focus.
