Networking Lab: Reaching Out to Alumni (In-Person)

Networking is not about asking strangers for jobs. It is about building relationships, learning from people’s experiences, and opening doors through conversations. In this lab-style session, you will learn how to find Rutgers alumni using LinkedIn tools, draft outreach messages that get responses, and plan networking conversations that feel natural and professional. You will leave with messages you can send the same day and a simple plan for keeping momentum.

What You Will Learn and Do

You will leave with:

• Learn how to use LinkedIn’s alumni tool to find Rutgers grads by major, industry, location, and role


• Draft outreach messages for different situations (curiosity, informational interviews, internship advice)


• Learn how to follow up professionally without feeling pushy


• Build a short plan for networking conversations, including what to ask and how to prepare


• Identify next steps for staying connected and growing your professional network over time

Great fit for you if you:

• Want to connect with alumni but do not know what to say


• Have tried networking before and did not get responses


• Want to explore careers and learn from professionals in roles you are curious about


• Want to build confidence reaching out before career fairs, internships, or job searches

How to prepare

Bring a laptop if possible and come with your LinkedIn sign-in. If you can, bring one career area you are exploring and one question you would like to ask an alumnus.
