Policies and Guidelines:

Programs/Information Session No-Show and Cancellation Policy

Participants are considered "no-shows" when they fail to cancel their RSVPs through Rutgers Handshake with sufficient notice (within 24 hours of the program). Failure to attend events for which students have submitted RSVPs will result in a suspension of all Handshake privileges, including On-Campus Interviews and job postings. In case of inclement weather, please check www.rutgers.edu to determine the University's operating status. We will follow all closings and delays.

Field Trip Note: Seating for this visit is limited. Therefore, while this event is free to attend, failure to show will result in a fee of $25 (the per person cost of the event) being charged to your student account.

Appeal Process: Contact careerservices@echo.rutgers.edu to appeal the imposition of no-show cancellation sanctions.

Why we need a no-show/cancellation policy for events: Please note that when participants no-show for events that require an RSVP, it is unfair to potential participants who wanted to attend but couldn't due to a possible waitlist. In addition, for some events (not all) we have employers and organizers who participate and they are giving their time to assist RU students/alumni. Thus, having no-shows for RSVP events not only reflects negatively on you but on Rutgers University as well. Moreover, such lapses of etiquette are generally not tolerated in business and civic settings.


Career Advising Appointment No-Show and Cancellation Policy

We understand that unexpected academic obligations, work commitments, and illnesses can affect your schedule. However, please advise University Career Services of any change as early as possible, as there is a high demand for counseling appointments. Your cancellation will allow us to offer your time slot to another student. Be sure to check your schedule carefully in order to avoid multiple appointment cancellations.

Please note the following cancellation procedures and policies:
If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so through your Handshake account by 5:00 pm the business day prior to your appointment. If you have a same-day urgent reason for canceling, call the office where your appointment is scheduled to cancel: Busch Campus Center at 848-445-6127 or 106 Somerset Street, 4th floor (Gateway Transit Village Building) at 848-932-7997.

  • No Show Policy: If you do not cancel the appointment by 5 pm the day before and do not show up, it will be recorded as a "No Show." Two or more No Shows in a semester will result in a suspension of all Handshake privileges until you send a three paragraph/ one-page letter to careerservices@echo.rutgers.edu, subject line = “No-Show Appointment” discussing: 
    • The general reason why you did not provide sufficient notice to cancel your appointment (confidential personal information does not need to be shared).
    • An overview of why it is important to provide advance notice when possible to cancel an appointment.
    • A statement indicating your intention to follow the University No Show/Cancellation policy in the future.
  • Cancellation Policy:  Cancelling an appointment three times or more in a semester will result in a suspension of all Handshake privileges until you send a three paragraph/ one-page letter to careerservices@echo.rutgers.edu, subject line = “Cancellation of Appointments” discussing: 
    • The general reason why you have canceled appointments
    • An overview of why it is important that you not consistently cancel appointments.
    • A statement indicating your intention to follow the University Career Services No Show/Cancellation policy in the future.
  • Late arrival policy: If you arrive later than 10 minutes for your appointment, you will be asked to reschedule.

On-Campus Interviewing and Resume Submission Policy

Interviewing Code of Ethics: As a participant in the Rutgers On-Campus Interviewing Program (Rutgers Handshake), you must adhere to the ethical standards established by University Career Services.  Failure to conduct your recruiting activities according to these standards jeopardizes your own job search, as well as those of your peers, and the broader relationship between Rutgers University and affected employers.

Resume Submission Policy: Only submit resumes to those employers in which you have a sincere interest and with which you plan to interview if selected.

Candidate Selection and Interview Scheduling Policy: If an employer selects you for an interview, you are expected to accept, schedule, prepare and be present for the interview.

Interview Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel the interview, you have two options for doing so:

  • Prior to the week of the interview —cancel online through “Interviews I Qualify For.”
  • The week of the interview—call 848-445-7287 between 8:30 am and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, at least 48 hours prior to your interview; otherwise you will be considered a no-show.

After three interview cancellations, you will be blocked from Handshake for the current academic year.

If you cancel an interview, you must inform the employer in writing and contact and provide a copy to the University Career Services Employer Relations Team at recruiting@echo.rutgers.edu.

No-Show Policy: Scheduling an interview is a formal commitment between you, the employer, and Rutgers University. You are committed to showing up for all scheduled interviews.  You will be considered a “no show” if you do not appear for your interview and do not call to cancel at least 48 hours prior to your interview. If you are a no-show you are required to send a letter of apology to the employer and provide a copy to the University Career Services Employer Relations team at recruiting@echo.rutgers.edu.  After one no-show, you will be blocked from Handshake until you meet with a Career Advisor to discuss the specific circumstance surrounding this instance.

Misrepresentation Policy: Your student profile and resume will be periodically checked against the registrar’s records, e.g. GPA, work authorization, and graduation date. If you misrepresent yourself, your privileges on the Handshake will be rescinded and you will be subject to Rutgers University disciplinary action. Also, please note that you are not permitted to share your Handshake password.  Access to Handshake is not transferable. 


Offer Acceptance Guidelines for Students 

In accordance with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) guidelines, our goal is not to dictate a specific time frame but to encourage practices that create a transparent and equitable process for students and employers. Effective communication is essential to align with NACE Principles for Ethical Professional Practice, which seeks to “maintain a recruitment process that is fair and equitable and that supports informed and responsible decision-making by candidates.”

According to NACE, it is recommended that employers allow students to participate in recruiting activities such as information sessions, career fairs, and on-campus interviews to enable suitable long-term employment choices and reduce the likelihood of reneging on job offers. In keeping with this practice, we recommend employers establish and incorporate offer extension protocols where students are free from undue pressure, and requests for extensions are honored within reason. As a guide, once a written employment offer is received, a minimum of two weeks should be allowed for you to make an informed decision. If you require an extension beyond these deadlines, you should ask the employer directly. Depending upon individual circumstances, some employers will extend their deadlines, while others may not. If you need guidance with regard to evaluating job offers, we strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment with University Career Services.

If you RECEIVE an offer, you may continue to interview with other employers. However, be certain that you respond to the offering employer prior to their deadline. Once you have verbally ACCEPTED an offer for a full-time position, internship or co-op, requests that the offer be made in writting. It is ethically wrong, and strongly discouraged, to continue to interview, send letters of application and conduct other job search activities for opportunities with similar or competing start dates as the accepted offer. Your acceptance is a formal commitment to the employer that should be honored. Reneging on an offer (accepting an offer then withdrawing that acceptance) not only damages your personal credibility and professional reputation but also reflects badly on Rutgers University. In addition, the employer may decide to discontinue recruiting at Rutgers, thus jeopardizing opportunities for future candidates. If you renege on a written offer, your on-campus recruiting and job listing rights may be permanently revoked.
