Melissa Blake

Associate Director for Strategic Comm. & Marketing
Operations & Strategic Initiatives

In my role at UCS, I develop and harness our authentic voice and visual identity to communicate our mission, values, and services to our audiences. I provide the vision, direction, and supervision to the creative team that completes over 250 projects, publications, and videos annually. Our media engagement strategies range from motivational marketing campaigns, weekly email publications, an interactive social media approach, to the creation of a 45-page annual career and internship guide.

Prior to working at Rutgers, I was a Marketing & Brand Manager for the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ, where I lead marketing and advertising efforts for more than nine counties in New Jersey. I took our organization through a rebranding process to align with a refreshed and relevant national Girl Scout brand and image. I managed the annual creative production plan, negotiated vendor contracts, and engaged audiences in multi-dimensional campaigns to increase recruitment and revenue streams.

I am an alumna of Rider University for both my bachelor's degree in journalism, news editorial, and my master's degree in organizational leadership, communications.

1: Don't give up and be persistent. If you don't take a chance or go after an opportunity, you will never know what could have happened. This means apply for a job or internship, even if you think you may not get it. Ask someone in a position you admire for advice or a conversation.
2: There is no substitute for hard work, so take the time to prepare. When you have doubts, return to the work and concentrate on doing the best job possible, everything else will fall into place.
